Frankincense, to most people, has always been an ancient, mystical and mysterious herb. That according to Christian Bible texts three of the wisest men were sent out and traveled over great distances, directed by the star of Bethlehem, to Jesus of Nazareth, to present unto the “son of God”, frankincense, for his very first birthday present.
Needless to say, you’d have to think, that if frankincense was given to the “son of God”, for his very first birthday,it would have to be something very special.
As to why frankincense was given, is a long and lengthy discussion. However, the Romans of that period used frankincense in their own rituals, so it stands to reason that frankincense had some spiritual aspects for other religions, as well as the Christians.
Frankincense is stored in the great chamber of the house of God in Jerusalem, was used at the great Temple of Babylon, and western India still performs rituals with frankincense.
After my research of the herb, I’d come to the amazing conclusion to frankincense being THE perfect gift.
The medicinal properties found in the herb are nothing short of miraculous. Frankincense is an extracted gummy resin from the trunk of a leafy forest-type tree called “Boswellia Thurifera”.
The flowers from this tree are light red and white. Interestingly, the Mediterranean tree grows coastally, and not in a typical looking soil, but out of a polished marble rock bedding that looks like a mixture of mortar and lime.
When the white, milky substance is extracted from the trunk, after exposure to the air, it hardens to a yellowish substance in about 3 mos. At this point it is the correct consistency to harvest. All resins must be harvested before any rainy days, so diligent care must be taken to ensure a good harvest. Somalians pay greatly to Arabia to collect the resin in Dhofar and surrounding areas.
Boswellic acid and albano resin are the main components of the herb, of which both are very valuable in their healing properties.
Frankincense fortifies the mind, body, and soul. It invigorates every cell in the body. What total effects of the healing experience to the nervous, respiratory and immune systems are not exactly known, but what is known is exciting. The new discoveries to the potential uses of this herb are continuous and enlightening.
Ancient remedies & Modern uses :
Frankincense was used for leprosy by the Chinese. And during the 10th century, a highly regarded physician, physicist, chemist & astrologer known as Avicenna, recommended it for a variety of maladies including, vomiting, fever, dysentery, ulcers, & tumors.
It was “Pliny the Elder”, a naturalist, who used frankincense as an antidote to hemlock. Ailments, such as bronchitis and laryngitis, are said to be relieved by the steam vapors of this herb.
Today’s practicable applications of frankincense, is its use in incense burning, (meaning, the burning of an herb for the aroma given off by the smoke of the odorous substance).
Frankincense has always been obtainable through out Europe, and plentiful above all other aromatics imported from the East.
Additionally, because of it’s clean, pleasant and refreshing aroma. Frankincense has been added to many cosmetic products, including hand lotions and facial creams for women. And because of its’ beneficial properties it has been widely received and acclaimed.
I hope I’ve helped to demystify this mysterious and spiritual herb called frankincense, so that all will want to experience its’ miraculous healing properties in your every day lives.
