For years I’d been an anti-smoking advocate, always the first one tell a smoker to “put that nasty thing out” or “do you mind not blowing that my way” or “do you know nicotine/cigarettes are unhealthy”, especially in a restaurant where I was enjoying my meal.

NEVER in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that cigarettes could be good for anybody, but I did some research and this is what I found.

I’ve never smoked a day in my life, and had always wondered WHY so many scientists, professors, doctors, my husband, and even my own dad smoked, and upon questioning them, one phrase resonated amongst all others, they would say, “It helps me think better”, and it turns out they are right.

In my research I’ve found several studies that have shown smokers to have significantly lower rates of Alzheimers’ and Parkinsons’ diseases.

Nicotine boosts your supply of the critical brain chemical acetylcholine, which if found in shortage in the brain, is directly linked to Alzheimers’ and Parkinsons’ diseases. That after a smoker quits smoking the protective effect of nicotine wears off.

Another large study involving the impact of smoking on clinical and angiographic restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention, shows the benefits of smoking. This time the benefit concerns restenosis, that is, the occlusion of coronary arteries. The study shows that smokers have a much better survival rate and heal better with overall recovery.

And despite what the media has put out, nicotine in several oral health studies, show that severe gum recession is less of a risk for smokers as compared to non-smokers.

A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (5-20-98) reports that carriers of a particular gene mutation (which predisposes the carrier to breast cancer) who smoked cigarettes for more than 4 years were found to have a statistically significant 54% decrease in breast cancer incidence when compared with carriers who never smoked.

There are many more benefits to the use of nicotine that native and indigenous peoples from around the world have known about and have harnessed for generations.

The benefits of smoking tobacco has always been common knowledge for centuries. From sharpening mental acuity to maintaining optimal weight. The relatively small risks of smoking have always been outweighed by the substantial improvements to the mental and physical health benefits to the smoker.

But because of the relentless anti-smoking media and my self-righteous-closed mindedness, I never realized the benefits of nicotine, that only after my research, and weighing the pro’s and con’s to smoking did I fully understand what health benefits nicotine/cigarettes has to offer.

And the moral of the story is: although I may not choose to smoke, I don’t have the right to tell anybody not to smoke, especially with all the health benefits nicotine/cigarettes has to offer.

Although, I don’t suggest you take up smoking there is an alternative, nicotinic acid more commonly called Niacin is a relative of nicotine.

Some excellent food sources for niacin are liver (not my favorite), peanuts, fish and some varieties of mushrooms.
