I can’t help but feel,that with all the dangerous, ill tested, unhealthy products out on the market today the USFDA must be wrong about its rejections toward this simple compound, found after the processing of paper, dimthyl solfoxide (DMSO), and give it the respect it deserves.

Through 50 years of research, throughout 125 countries that have approved DMSO as a pharmacological agent, and 10,000 plus scientific articles for DMSO’s biological implications, the USFDA has only approved DMSO’s use as a treatment for the medical condition “intestinal cystitis” - inflammation of the bladder wall.

For over 50 years, “the father of DMSO”, Dr. Jacobs has been in an uphill battle against the USFDA over DMSO and isn’t slowing down in his efforts to establish the respect DMSO deserves. Dr. Jabcob’s has revealed new data that shows the potential of DMSO in treating trauma of the brain that afflicts 50,000 plus Americans every year.

Because of DMSO’s anti-inflammatory and analgesic compound it has been shown that when DMSO is immediately given, intravenously, to a closed head trauma patient, within 5 minutes the swelling of the brain is reduced drastically. DMSO according to Dr. Jacobs, improves the supply of blood oxygen to cells,is a potent free-radical scavenger and therefore increases blood supply to the brain to aleve the swelling.

DMSO was discovered by a Russian chemist in the late 1800’s who isolated the simple compound, but was not fully explored until the early 1960’s when the company Crown Zellerbach Corp directed it’s staff chemist Dr. Herschler to investigate the potential of DMSO. Dr. Herschler was exited to find that DMSO penetrated the leaves of plants and thought DMSO an excellent carrier agent to deliver nutrients atop porous subjects.

The earliest of DMSO studies have shown it penetrates rapidly into the skin and relieves inflammation, such as sprains. Dr’s Herscher and Jacobs both believed DMSO could treat arthritis because of its potential in penetrating so quickly into the skin.

Major newspapers carried the story of the “inexpensive simple revolutionary compound” with its therapeutic principles, safety and effectiveness, especially when applied topically to the skin. And even though there were positive results of approx. 70,000 patients using DMSO for a variety of ailments and 1,500 physicians showing its safety and effectiveness, that because of 1 Irish woman’s allergic reaction to DMSO the USFDA put a stop at any more governmental studies of DMSO, thereby killing any chances of DMSO being approved by the USFDA.

When the large companies of Merck, Centex, and Squibb found the inexpensive DMSO to be safe and effective in a wide array of musculoskeletal problems and submitted New Drug Applications to the USFDA in 1965, on Sept. 9, 1965 the Wall Street Journal reported the death of an Irish woman being treated for a sprained wrist with DMSO. An autopsy was never done, the drug companies assumed an allergic reaction to DMSO was the cause.

Dr. Jacobs belief in the safety and effectiveness of DMSO led to several bills being introduced to Congress but none left the committee approved. During the 1980’s Dr. Jacobs, as the leading expert on DMSO, was called to testify before the US Senate Subcommittee on Health and explained DMSO’s treatment potential benefits towards conditions including, arthritis,spinal cord injury, prostate cancer, bursitis herpes stroke, breast cancer,retinitis pigmentosa head injuries and many other malady’s.

DMSO is not illegal and can be sold in health food stores or on the internet and although it is an uphill battle, with the help of Dr. Jacobs who is diligently still trying to get the USFDA’s approval I am positive DMSO (dimthylsulfoxide) WILL get the respect it deserves.
